Judging Criteria

To provide a fair, consistent, and constructive judging process, each competitive group will be evaluated in two categories, with each category accounting for 50% of the group’s overall score.

Ethnic Quality — 50%

This category evaluates how effectively the group represents the cultural and regional traditions reflected in its performance. Judges will consider:

• Styling — appropriate posture, movement, character, and stylistic details

• Steps & Patterns — accuracy and appropriate execution of traditional steps and formations

• Authenticity — faithfulness to the traditions and character of the region or material being presented

• Choice of Material — appropriateness, variety, and cultural relevance of the dances selected

• Choice of Music — suitability and authenticity of the musical selections used

Presentation — 50%

This category evaluates the overall execution, organization, and stage presentation of the performance. Judges will consider:

• Orientation & Choreography — effective use of formations, transitions, and the performance space

• Improvisation — appropriate and skillful use of improvisational elements where applicable

• Expression & Connection to the Music — the dancers’ energy, expression, and relationship to the musical character

• Precision & Musicality — timing, synchronization, and ability to remain on beat

• Group Direction — overall preparation, discipline, organization, and evidence of rehearsal

Special Awards

In addition to the regular judging categories, groups may also be recognized with special awards highlighting particular elements of excellence. The proposed Special Awards are:

Costume Award
Recognizing the quality, authenticity, presentation, and appropriateness of traditional costumes.

Folk Expression Award
Recognizing a group that demonstrates exceptional spirit, cultural expression, and connection to the traditions being presented. Live musicians who are members of or regularly participate with the group may be considered as part of this recognition; hired outside musicians will not be included in the evaluation.

Choral Award
Recognizing outstanding incorporation and presentation of traditional vocal or choral elements.

Scores & Feedback

Our goal is for Parathosi to be both a celebration of our heritage and an opportunity for every participating group to grow.

Following the festival, all participating groups—both competitive and exhibition—will receive their scores, judges’ comments, and constructive feedback in a timely manner. This allows directors and dancers to understand the strengths of their presentation while identifying opportunities for continued development.

Directors’ Meetings

Clear communication between the Parathosi leadership and participating directors is essential to a successful festival. A minimum of two Directors’ Meetings will be scheduled prior to the event.

These meetings will provide opportunities to review:

• Judging standards and expectations

• Festival rules and procedures

• Scheduling and logistical information

• Competition and exhibition requirements

• Questions or concerns from participating directors
